Job Description
For one of our clients operating a modern inland navigation fleet, we are looking for an experienced (Technical) Vessel Superintendent. This role is key in ensuring safe, reliable and efficient operations of tanker and barge vessels, primarily active on major European waterways such as the Rhine.
As a Vessel Superintendent, you combine strong technical expertise with visible, people-oriented leadership. You act as the main technical point of contact for crew members and play a pivotal role in maintaining high operational standards and crew satisfaction.
Your Role
As (Technical) Vessel Superintendent, you are responsible for the day-to-day technical management of the inland fleet. You work closely with fleet management and internal departments while maintaining frequent contact with crew, suppliers, shipyards and technical partners.
Your Responsibilities
- Oversee the daily technical condition and performance of the fleet, ensuring high standards of safety, reliability and efficiency
- Act as the primary technical point of contact for captains and crew members
- Build and maintain strong, trust-based relationships with crews, contributing to crew satisfaction and retention
- Conduct regular onboard visits to provide hands-on support, troubleshooting and visible technical leadership
- Ensure 24/7 availability for urgent technical issues through an on-call rotation system
- Act swiftly and decisively to minimise downtime and operational disruption
- Coordinate and follow up on maintenance, repairs, inspections and audits, supporting the captain during onboard audits
- Lead and manage technical projects and refits from preparation to execution
- Prepare, monitor and optimise maintenance plans
- Collaborate closely with fleet management and relevant internal departments
- Maintain daily communication with suppliers, shipyards and external technical partners
- Monitor technical expenditures and align costs with fleet needs and long-term objectives
- Ensure compliance with European inland navigation regulations and safety standards
Profile
Who are you as a Technical Superintendent?
- Bachelor’s degree in Maritime Technology, Electromechanics, or a similar technical field
- Experience in technical ship management, preferably in inland navigation
- Solid knowledge of ship systems, including engines, propulsion and electrical installations
- Fluent in English and German (or willing to learn German). Knowledge of Dutch is a plus
- Hands-on, solution-oriented, and strong in project follow-up
- Strong communication skills and the ability to build trust, also on board
- Flexible and willing to regularly visit operational locations
